At BrilliantRead Media, we always strive to bring meaningful and powerful stories from India and around the world to empower and motivate our growing community. As part of this endeavour, we invited Ambali Bhattacharyya for an exclusive interview with us. Ambali is a Contemporary Artist, Art Educator and Founder at Ame by Ambali Fine Art Academy. Let’s learn more about her background, journey and her advice for our community!
Excerpts from our exclusive interview with Ambali:
Your journey beautifully combines being an artist, educator, and entrepreneur. How did your relationship with art begin, and when did you realise it was your life’s calling?
Art has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. I started painting when I was just five years old, and nature became my first teacher. What began as a childhood fascination gradually evolved into a language through which I understood the world around me. Over time, through creating, exhibiting, and teaching, I realised that art was not merely something I did it was who I was meant to be.
As a contemporary artist, how would you describe your artistic style and the emotions or messages you seek to communicate through your work?
My work is deeply rooted in storytelling and emotion. Whether I am working with watercolour, acrylic, charcoal, or mixed media, I find myself drawn to moments that often go unnoticed: human connections, resilience, nostalgia, and the quiet poetry hidden in everyday life. More than recreating a scene, I strive to capture a feeling.
You are the Director of Âme by Ambali Fine Art Academy. What inspired you to create a space that blends art, learning, and community?
I wanted to create something beyond a conventional art studio. My vision was to build a space where creativity could be experienced without intimidation a welcoming environment where artists, hobbyists, children, and professionals could come together to learn, connect, and grow through art.
As an art educator, what do you think are the biggest misconceptions people have about creativity and artistic talent? Can art truly be learned?
One of the biggest misconceptions is that creativity belongs only to a gifted few. I strongly believe creativity exists within everyone.
While talent may influence where someone begins, growth comes through observation, practice, curiosity, and persistence. Art can absolutely be learned.
As an International Brand Ambassador for global art brands like Rockwell Art and Baohong Canada, how has international exposure influenced your creative perspective?
Collaborating with artists and brands across different countries has broadened my understanding of art beyond cultural boundaries. It has reinforced my belief that although artistic styles may vary, the emotional language of art remains universal.
In today’s digital world, where trends change quickly, how do you stay authentic as an artist while also evolving with time?
I embrace new ideas and platforms, but only if they align with my artistic voice. The goal is never to chase trends; it is to remain authentic while continuing to evolve and grow.
Many people hesitate to pursue art professionally because of uncertainty. What advice would you give aspiring artists who want to turn passion into a sustainable career?
Treat your art with the seriousness of any profession. Dedicate yourself to mastering your craft, but also learn communication, presentation, and business skills.
A sustainable career is built on consistency, patience, resilience, and a willingness to keep learning.
Art often becomes a form of healing and self-expression. Have there been moments in your own life where art helped you navigate challenges or transformation?
Absolutely. One of the most transformative periods of my life came after I stepped away from the private limited company I had built due to serious health challenges. For the first time in years, I found myself unable to work, isolated, and struggling physically as well as emotionally.
Although I had painted since childhood, I had never imagined art as a professional path. During that difficult phase, I returned to painting simply as a way to cope, reflect, and heal.
What began as a source of comfort gradually became a source of purpose. Looking back, art did far more than help me recover; it helped me rediscover myself and ultimately led me to the life and career I have today.
As someone deeply involved in mentoring and education, what is one lesson you wish every child and adult learned through art?
That mistakes are not failures; they are part of the creative process. Art teaches patience, resilience, confidence, and the courage to keep going, even when things do not unfold perfectly.
What is the larger vision behind your work? When people think of Ambali Bhattacharyya years from now, what impact would you love your art and initiatives to have?
I hope my work is remembered not only for the paintings I created but also for the confidence and direction I helped bring to aspiring artists.
Over the years, I have met many individuals eager to leave their jobs immediately and pursue art full-time. While I deeply admire their passion, I often encourage them to first build strong artistic foundations, refine their skills, understand the industry, and learn the business side of art. Creativity alone is not enough to sustain a career.
One of the most fulfilling aspects of teaching has been watching people begin to see art not merely as a hobby, but as a meaningful profession. If my work inspires others to pursue creativity with both passion and purpose, that would be a legacy I would truly cherish.
Your work has been exhibited across India and internationally. How has travel and exposure to different cultures shaped your artistic vision?
Travel has taught me to observe beyond appearances. It has expanded my perspective while deepening my appreciation for my own roots. It constantly reminds me that art can be deeply personal while also universally relatable.
You wear many hats: artist, educator, entrepreneur, mentor, mother, and creative leader. How do you balance these roles while staying creatively inspired?
I do not see these roles as separate compartments they constantly nourish one another. For me, balance is not about doing everything perfectly. It is about being fully present in whichever role needs me the most at a given moment.
What does success mean to you today compared to when you first began your artistic journey?
Earlier, success meant recognition and opportunities. Today, success means staying authentic in my work, building a meaningful community, and creating an impact that lasts beyond exhibitions and accolades.
What role do you believe art plays in society today, especially in an increasingly fast-paced and technology-driven world?
Art encourages observation, empathy, reflection, and human connection. In a fast-moving world, it offers people a chance to pause, feel, and reconnect with what truly matters.
If you could leave one message for the next generation of artists, what would it be?
Learn from others, but never lose your own voice. The world does not need another copy; it needs your perspective, your story, and your truth.
You often speak about art as a journey rather than a destination. What continues to excite you about creating after so many years?
The fact that there is always more to discover. Every painting teaches me something new, and that endless sense of curiosity continues to inspire me every single day.
What are you currently working on, and what can audiences look forward to in the coming months?
I am currently working on Rajasthan Unscripted, a series inspired by a recent visit to Rajasthan in collaboration with Taj Devi Ratan. What stayed with me most was not just the beauty of the place, but the warmth, character, and stories of its people.
Through this body of work, I hope to celebrate Rajasthan’s culture, colours, resilience, and everyday moments through expressive and heartfelt paintings. Many of the works are inspired by quiet, ordinary encounters that reveal the true soul of Rajasthan.
The first two works from the series have already found collectors, which has been incredibly encouraging. I am excited to continue this journey and share more stories from Rajasthan through my art.
